Speedball set for reboot on Steam

The Bitmap Brothers classic game, Speedball, is set for a reboot on Steam, and the game is currently available as part of Steam’s early access programme.

Speedball is a futuristic sports video game series first released in 1988. Combining elements of ice hockey and handball with a dystopian twist, players control armored teams competing in a violent arena, scoring points by hurling a steel ball into the opponent’s goal and by injuring rivals.

The most successful title, Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe (1990), expanded on the original with new features and appeared on a range platforms after its launch on the Atari ST and Amiga. Later entries, like Speedball 2100 (2000) on PlayStation and Speedball 2 HD (2013) never quite captured the magic.

Rebellion, who now own the rights to Speedball said that they chose early access as “we understand that the series has an existing, passionate fanbase and we wanted to make sure they are involved in the game’s development journey. We are looking forward to speaking with fans, seeing their reactions and building a game that everyone can be proud of.”

“The community will be vital in shaping Speedball as it progresses through Early Access. We have created a dedicated Discord Server for Speedball where you can post your feedback and suggestions. We want your ideas on everything from gameplay mechanics and content, right through to bug reporting and the game modes you want to see in the final version. This will be the best place to receive updates on the game’s progress, so we encourage everyone to join and take part.”
