Analogue, have turned its talents to recreating Nintendo’s N64 console with the Analogue3D, a device designed to play original Nintendo 64 cartridges using FPGA technology. This system aims to faithfully recreate the N64 experience with a focus on accuracy and preservation, offering 4K resolution output while maintaining 100% compatibility with the entire N64 library.
Unlike software emulation, which can introduce issues like input lag, graphical inconsistencies, and timing inaccuracies, Analogue3D is built using an FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) chip. This allows it to replicate the original N64 hardware at the transistor level, ensuring that games run exactly as they would on the original console, but with the benefit of modern hardware improvements. Analogue3D is also region-free, supporting cartridges from any part of the world.
The Analogue3D offers a 4K HDMI output, delivering a much higher resolution than the N64’s original output. It also features “Original Display Modes,” designed to mimic the look and feel of CRT displays. For gamers who want to experience the visual style of the 1990s, these modes offer an alternative to the sharp, modern presentation typical of upscaling.
Multiplayer Support
Known for its extensive multiplayer library, the N64’s local multiplayer experience is preserved with four original-style controller ports. In addition, Analogue has collaborated with 8BitDo to create a wireless Bluetooth version of the N64 controller, featuring modern upgrades such as a HALL Effect joystick, but still maintaining the classic design. Analogue3D is also compatible with original N64 controllers and accessories.
3Dos: A New Operating System for N64
The device runs on 3Dos, a new operating system designed specifically for Analogue3D. It offers various customization and system management features tailored to the N64 experience, including support for over-the-air updates via dual-band WiFi.
Preserving N64 for the Future
Analogue3D aims to preserve the legacy of the N64 through FPGA hardware, offering a high degree of accuracy for gamers who want to revisit this era without the challenges often associated with software emulation. The system includes built-in features such as an Expansion Pak, Memory Pak, and an SD card slot for saving and updating software.
Analogue3D is available for pre-order now, with a price of $249.99. It ships in Q1 2025. For more information or to secure your unit, click here.
