The much-anticipated Playdate dock, a stylish accessory for Panic Inc.’s quirky handheld gaming console, may not be coming out anytime soon. Despite its initial announcement in 2021, Panic co-founder Cabel Sasser recently acknowledged the challenges surrounding its production.
In a Threads exchange with a Emanuel Schwarz, Sasser revealed that the dock had faced numerous unforeseen difficulties, calling them “incredibly hard for lots of incredibly dumb reasons.” He further admitted that the project is currently on pause, with no clear timeline for its release. “We still dream of doing it though! Someday?!” Sasser added, leaving fans with little more than hope for a future release.
The Playdate, which launched in 2022, is a handheld console known for its retro black-and-white screen and unique hand-crank, used as a control mechanism in certain games. Since its release, it has charmed gamers with its blend of minimalist design and innovative game mechanics. The Playdate dock was expected to complement this aesthetic, offering a charging station, a Bluetooth speaker for improved audio, and a pen holder for added flair.
However, it seems the Playdate dock, which many saw as a perfect addition to the device’s charming ecosystem, has been indefinitely delayed. Given the ongoing difficulties, it appears increasingly unlikely that the dock will see the light of day anytime soon.
